What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students create maps, reports, presentations, or displays that answer a geographic question. They use reliable sources, accurate facts, and geographic concepts to support a clear conclusion.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student selects useful evidence, cites sources, and explains patterns involving location, movement, people, and environments. The finished product is organized, accurate, and easy to interpret.

Common Misconceptions

Students may collect facts without connecting them to a geographic question. They may copy source material, omit citations, misuse map features, or choose visuals that do not support their conclusion.

How to Assess It

Ask students to create one annotated map showing a migration pattern, then write two sentences explaining the pattern and cite one reliable source.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs printed climate, population, and resource maps to create an annotated poster explaining where people settle and why.

  2. Ask students to write: How does physical geography shape daily life in one world region? Support the answer with two sources.

  3. Run a source sorting game where teams classify cards as reliable, questionable, or unsuitable, then defend each choice.

  4. Have students create a briefing for a relief agency choosing where to send supplies after a flood, using maps and population data.
