What Students Need to Do: Students compare information from primary and secondary sources. They use relevant evidence from several sources to make a claim and explain why the evidence supports it.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students identify each source’s author, purpose, context, and point of view. They build a clear argument, cite multiple sources, address conflicting evidence, and explain their reasoning.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat every source as equally reliable or choose only evidence that supports their first idea. They may summarize sources without making a claim or explaining how the evidence supports it.
How to Assess It: Give students three short sources about a disputed historical event. Ask them to write one claim, cite evidence from two sources, and explain which source is most reliable.

Lesson moves

Give pairs four source cards about one event, then have them sort the cards by reliability and defend their rankings.
Ask students, "Which source best explains what happened, and what detail makes it stronger than the others?"
Play Evidence Match, where teams connect claim cards to source excerpts and earn points only when they explain each match.
Compare two local news reports and a public statement about one issue, then write a supported conclusion about what likely happened.
