What Students Need to Do: Students identify why a historical event happened and what happened as a result. They use facts from a source to explain the connection between causes and effects.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly sort events into causes and effects. They explain each link in a complete sentence and support it with a specific fact.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse the cause with the effect or assume the event listed first caused the next event. They may name a related fact without explaining the connection.
How to Assess It: Give students three facts about a familiar historical event. Ask them to label one cause and one effect, then explain the link in one sentence.

Lesson moves

Give pairs event cards to arrange into a cause-and-effect chain, then have them add arrows and spoken explanations between cards.
Ask students to write: What caused this event, what changed afterward, and which source detail proves your answer?
Play Cause or Effect by reading event statements while students hold up labeled cards and explain their choices for one point.
Use a school schedule change and ask students to identify its cause, immediate effects, and possible later effects.
