What Students Need to Do: Students identify why a historical event happened and what happened because of it. They connect each cause and effect using facts from a text, image, map, or timeline.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly label causes and effects in a familiar social studies example. They explain the connection using a clear statement such as, “Because this happened, that happened.”
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat any earlier event as a cause or reverse the cause and effect. They may also name a connection without explaining how one event led to the other.
How to Assess It: Give students a short paragraph about a community event. Ask them to underline one cause, circle one effect, and explain the connection in one sentence.

Lesson moves

Give pairs event cards from a studied topic to sort into causes and effects, then connect matching cards with yarn.
Ask students to write: “What caused this event, and what changed because of it?” using two facts from a class text.
Play Cause or Effect by reading event statements while students hold up a labeled card and explain their choice.
Examine a school closing caused by heavy snow, then list effects on families, workers, transportation, and local businesses.
