What Students Need to Do: Students examine two people, places, objects, or events. They name matching and different details, then explain what those details show.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can give one accurate similarity and one accurate difference. The student supports each comparison with a detail from a picture, map, text, or class discussion.
Common Misconceptions: Students may name only differences or say two things are “the same” without giving a detail. They may also compare unrelated features, such as color in one picture and size in another.
How to Assess It: Show pictures of a classroom long ago and a classroom today. Ask students to tell or write one similarity and one difference, using picture details.

Lesson moves

Give pairs picture cards of homes, clothing, and transportation to sort, then have them explain why two cards belong together.
Read about two community helpers, then ask, “How are their jobs alike, and how are they different?”
Play Compare It by drawing two place cards and earning a point for naming one accurate similarity or difference.
Compare the classroom and library rules, then discuss why each place has some shared rules and some different rules.
