What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain that people do jobs to earn money and can save some for later. They tell needs from wants and make a choice when their money cannot buy everything.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a small amount of play money and priced items, students choose what to buy or save for. They explain their choice and name an item they cannot get.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think money appears without someone working for it. They may call every wanted item a need or think saving means they can still spend the same money now.
How to Assess It
- Give each student this prompt: “You earned $3. An apple costs $2 and a ball costs $3.” Ask what they would buy or save for, why, and what they give up.

Ways to Teach It
Set up a pretend store with price tags, job cards, and play money; students earn, spend, or save their coins.
Ask, “You have $3: buy a sandwich or a sticker?” Students choose, draw their choice, and explain why.
Play Need, Want, or Save: students hold up picture cards after hearing short money scenarios.
Examine a grocery flyer, circle one family need and one want, then choose what to buy with $5.
