The Standard
The student will apply history and social science skills to describe the relative location of people, places, and objects by using positional words, including, but not limited to near/far, over/under, above/below, left/right, behind/in front, next to and between.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use position words to tell where a person, place, or object is located. They describe locations in relation to another object or person.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students follow directions such as placing a block behind a cup or between two books. They accurately describe an object’s location using words such as near, above, left, or next to.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may mix up left and right or use above and under as if they mean the same thing. They may also name a position without stating what the object is near, behind, or between.
How to Assess It
- Place a pencil, cup, and book on a table. Ask each student to describe the pencil’s location using two different position words.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a toy animal, cup, and box, then call out positions for students to build and describe.
Show a classroom photo and ask, “Where is the clock compared with the door?”
Play Position Simon Says with directions such as stand behind your chair or hold your hand above your head.
Use a simple school map and have students explain where the office, cafeteria, or playground is compared with another place.
