What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find and name the continents and oceans on maps and globes. They use the equator and Prime Meridian to identify hemispheres and describe relative locations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately label a blank world map without a word bank. They can explain that Africa crosses both reference lines and lies in all four hemispheres.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse continents with countries or think the equator separates east from west. They may also treat Europe and Asia as one continent or overlook the Southern Ocean.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank world map and ask them to label three continents, two oceans, both reference lines, and all four hemispheres.

Ask students to write directions for finding Australia using one ocean, one reference line, and one hemisphere.
Play map bingo with continent, ocean, hemisphere, equator, and Prime Meridian clues called aloud.
Use a world weather map to compare current temperatures in continents from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
