What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name people who shape their community and explain what each person does. They identify a local event from the past and retell how people helped the community grow or change.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can match local community members with their jobs and explain how those jobs help others. The student can sequence pictures from a local story and describe what happened using past-time words.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think community history includes only famous national people or events. They may confuse past and present, or describe a worker's uniform without explaining the person's role.
How to Assess It
- Give students a two-box exit ticket. Ask them to draw one local community member and one past local event, then dictate a sentence about each.

Ways to Teach It
Set up role-play stations with a toy medical kit, fire hat, books, and play money, then have students explain each worker’s role.
Show a photo of a local landmark and ask, “Who may have helped build, protect, teach, or work here?”
Play a picture-matching game pairing local workers with tools, workplaces, and the people they serve.
Invite a longtime resident or community worker to share one local story, then have students draw and label what changed.
