What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how classroom expectations keep people safe, help everyone learn, and make sharing fair. They pause, wait, take turns, and make a safe choice when upset or excited.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can match an expectation to its purpose and give a simple reason. During class routines, the student can stop, listen, wait, and choose an appropriate action with little prompting.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think expectations exist only to prevent punishment or because adults are in charge. They may also confuse self-control with staying silent or never feeling angry.

How to Assess It

Show a picture of a child grabbing a shared marker and ask, “What should the child do, and how does that help the class?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs picture cards showing classroom choices, then have them sort each choice under safe, fair, or ready to learn.

  2. Ask, “Why do we wait our turn?” and record each child’s answer beside a drawing of a classroom routine.

  3. Play Red Light, Green Light, adding cues to freeze, take one breath, and wait for the next direction.

  4. Walk through the school, stop at one posted expectation, and ask how following it helps students and staff.
