What Students Need to Do: Students explain why a rule exists and what problem it helps prevent. They connect rules to safety, fairness, order, and respect.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can name a familiar rule and explain its purpose in their own words. They can predict what might happen if people ignore it.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think rules exist only to punish people or stop fun. They may confuse a rule with a personal preference or assume every rule has the same purpose.
How to Assess It: Give students this exit prompt: “Choose one classroom rule. Explain why it exists and what could happen without it.”

Lesson moves

Give groups classroom scenario cards and have them create one rule, then label its purpose as safety, fairness, order, or respect.
Ask students to write: “Which playground rule helps people most, and why?” then compare answers with a partner.
Play Rule Match by pairing rule cards with purpose cards, then require students to explain each match aloud.
Study rules on a public pool sign and discuss how each one protects swimmers, workers, or shared spaces.
