What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the six goals in the Preamble and explain each in everyday language. They connect those goals to reasons for creating a national government.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can paraphrase each goal and give a fitting example of government action. They can explain that the Preamble sets goals but does not grant specific powers.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the Preamble lists laws or individual rights. They may confuse peace within the country with national defense, or treat public well-being as personal financial support.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose two Preamble goals. Paraphrase each goal and give one government action that could support it.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give pairs six Preamble goal cards and six scenario cards, then have them match each pair and explain every match.
Ask students to rank the six goals from most to least relevant today, then defend their top choice in three sentences.
Play Preamble Charades, where students act out a government action while classmates identify and explain the matching goal.
Project a local news story and have students label which Preamble goal the government action supports, with one sentence of evidence.
