What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain that the Constitution is the written plan for the federal government. They identify the legislative, executive, and judicial branches and describe how the document assigns each branch a role.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name the three branches and match each branch with its main job. They can explain that the Constitution organizes government and limits who may use each power.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the Constitution with the Declaration of Independence or think it lists every law. They may also mix up branch names, jobs, and leaders.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit prompt: “How does the Constitution organize the federal government? Name the three branches and one job for each.”

Sort job cards, such as making laws, carrying out laws, and interpreting laws, under three labeled branch cards.
Write two sentences answering: “Why does the country need a written plan for its government?”
