What Students Need to Do: Students tell what they did and describe what happened next. They choose a safe, fair way to repair a mistake.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can honestly name their choice without blaming someone else. They can apologize, fix the problem, or ask an adult for help.
Common Misconceptions: Some students think accidents do not need to be fixed, or that saying sorry ends the problem. They may blame a classmate or hide a mistake to avoid consequences.
How to Assess It: Show a picture of a child spilling a box of crayons. Ask, “What should the child say and do next?”

Lesson moves

Use puppets to act out spilling supplies, breaking a block tower, and cutting in line, then have students practice saying and fixing each mistake.
Ask, “Tell about a mistake you fixed. What did you say, and what did you do next?”
Play an “Own It” card game where students draw a classroom problem and name the action, result, and repair.
Assign classroom jobs, then hold a two-minute check-in where students report what they finished and how they handled any missed step.
