What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify how civic values guide choices at school, in the community, and in public life. They practice responding to disagreements and civic duties with honesty, responsibility, courtesy, and respect.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can choose a responsible response to a civic problem and explain which values support it. They listen without interrupting, use evidence, follow fair procedures, and accept responsibility for their actions.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think civility means agreeing or staying silent. They may confuse patriotism with unquestioning support, self-reliance with refusing help, or community service with military service only.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “A student believes a school rule is unfair. Describe a respectful response and name two civic values it demonstrates.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs civic dilemma cards to sort by responsible and irresponsible responses, then have them rewrite one weak response.

  2. Ask students to write: How can someone challenge an unfair school rule while showing civility, honesty, and respect for law?

  3. Play “Civic Choice”: teams select the best response to scenario cards and earn points only when their reasons name specific civic values.

  4. Have students choose one local service need, identify a volunteer action, and draft a short message inviting classmates to help.
