What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students investigate occupations offered by government agencies and private employers. They identify job duties, required skills, education, training, credentials, and experience. They use reliable sources to map steps from school to employment.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can classify a job by the employer, then explain why it belongs in the public or private sector. They can create a realistic career pathway and support it with current job information.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think all public-sector workers are elected officials or that every career requires a four-year degree. They may also classify jobs by duties instead of checking who employs and pays the worker.
How to Assess It
- Give students two job cards: city firefighter and retail manager. Ask them to identify each sector and list three realistic pathway steps for one career.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups job cards and education, training, and credential cards, then have them build and explain a pathway for each job.
Ask students to write: Which career fits your interests, and what education, training, or experience would you need to enter it?
Run a matching relay where teams pair occupations with employers, sectors, qualifications, and likely pathway steps.
Have students compare two local job postings and highlight the employer, duties, required skills, education, credentials, and experience.
