What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use reliable sources to find election dates, registration information, polling locations, and ways to vote in Virginia. They explain voter responsibilities and judge which steps apply in a given situation.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can use an official Virginia source to create an accurate voting plan for a sample voter. The plan includes key dates, registration, where and how to vote, and informed decision-making.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every election occurs in November, voters can use any polling place, or registration is always automatic. They may also confuse registering to vote with casting a ballot.

How to Assess It

Give students this exit ticket: “Jordan wants to vote in the next Virginia election. List four steps Jordan should take and name one official source to check.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a Virginia election calendar, sample registration form, and precinct map, then have them sequence the steps a first-time voter follows.

  2. Ask students to write: “Which voter responsibility best supports fair elections, and why?” Require one example from a Virginia voter guide.

  3. Play a card sort where students match voter scenarios with registration, early voting, mail voting, Election Day, or precinct information.

  4. Use the Virginia Department of Elections website to find the next election date and voter deadlines for your locality.
