What Students Need to Do: Students sort Virginia examples into things people make or grow and work people do for others. They name examples such as apples, milk, teaching, and firefighting.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student correctly identifies several Virginia products and jobs that help people. The student explains that a product can be used or bought, while a service is work someone performs.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call every job a service, even when a worker is making a product. They may also think a service is an object or that only factories produce goods.
How to Assess It: Give students four pictures: apples, milk, a teacher, and a firefighter. Ask them to label each as a good or service and explain one choice.

Lesson moves

Set up a sorting mat and have students place Virginia picture cards under goods or services.
Ask students to write or tell about one Virginia product they use and one worker who provides a service.
Play Goods or Services Corners by naming examples and having students move to the matching labeled corner.
Study a local store receipt and circle Virginia products, then name services workers provided during the shopping trip.
