What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how products and services are created, moved or offered to buyers, and used by customers. They classify examples as production, distribution, or consumption and explain how the stages connect.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a loaf of bread, a student identifies the bakery as producing it, the truck and store as distributing it, and the shopper as consuming it. The student can apply the same ideas to a service, such as a haircut.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think production happens only in factories, so they overlook farmers, artists, and service workers. They may confuse distribution with giving something away. They may think consumption means only eating, rather than buying or using any good or service.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A farmer grows apples, a truck carries them to a store, and a family buys and eats them. Label each action and explain your choices.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give groups picture cards of bread being baked, trucked, shelved, bought, and eaten; have them order and label the steps.
Ask, "How does a haircut reach a customer without a truck?" and have students write three sentences using the target terms.
Play a three-corner game: read scenarios, and students move to the production, distribution, or consumption corner and justify their choice.
Trace one cafeteria item from its source to the lunch table, naming who makes, moves, sells, and uses it.
