What Students Need to Do: Students sort examples into items people buy and work people do for others. They explain their choice using details from a picture or short scenario.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student correctly classifies familiar examples such as bread, a haircut, shoes, and bus rides. The student explains that an item can be held, while a service is an action someone performs.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think anything that costs money is an item. They may also sort by who provides it, rather than whether the customer receives an object or an action.
How to Assess It: Show pictures of a bicycle, a haircut, a book, and a car wash. Have students sort them into goods and services, then explain one choice.

Lesson moves

Give pairs picture cards of products and jobs, then have them sort the cards onto two labeled mats.
Ask students to draw one thing their family buys and one job someone does for their family.
Play Four Corners by naming examples while students move to the goods corner or services corner and explain their choice.
Create a class map of nearby stores, restaurants, clinics, and repair shops, then label what each place provides.
