Virginia SOL K.W.2

K.W.2 is a Standards of Learning standard. These are the knowledge and skills expectations under it.

• K.W.2.A.i

  Identifying the audience and purpose of the writing (e.g., letters, stories, “all about” book, etc)

• K.W.2.A.ii

  Composing or dictating simple sentences that include a subject (noun) and predicate(verb) focused on the topic

What Students Need to Do

Students decide who will receive their writing, what they want to communicate, and what form fits the message. They sketch an idea, consider a peer suggestion, then say, dictate, or write a topic-focused sentence with a naming part and an action part.

What Mastery Looks Like

With support, students can name their reader, explain their message, and choose a fitting form such as a note or story. Their picture and sentence match the topic, and the sentence names who or what and tells an action.

Common Misconceptions

Students may draw without deciding on a message or reader. They may give fragments such as “The dog” or “Runs fast,” copy a peer’s idea, or add details that do not match the topic.

How to Assess It

Ask each student to plan a note for a family member. Have the student name the reader and message, draw a plan, then dictate or write one complete sentence.

   Give each child a folded planning sheet to draw the reader, draw the message, and dictate one matching sentence.

   Use the partner prompt, “Name your reader, tell your message, and suggest one detail for your partner’s plan.”

3. 03

   Play Sentence Builder: students draw one noun card and one verb card, act out the combination, then say a complete sentence.

4. 04

   Write a class thank-you note to the custodian, planning a picture and one sentence that names the helper and the action.
