What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students draw and talk with a partner to choose and plan an idea. They compose or dictate a simple sentence that names who or what and tells what happens.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can use a sketch and a peer suggestion to add a relevant detail. The student then says or writes an on-topic sentence with a naming part and an action part.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may draw several unrelated ideas, then dictate a sentence that does not match the chosen topic. They may give only a noun or verb phrase, such as “The dog” or “runs fast,” or copy a partner’s whole idea.
How to Assess It
- Give students the topic “A game I play.” Have each student draw one idea, hear one peer suggestion, then write or dictate a complete sentence about it.

Ways to Teach It
Give students animal figures to pose, sketch, and describe with a sentence that names the animal and its action.
Ask, “What happens at recess?” Partners share ideas, suggest one detail, and each student draws and dictates a sentence.
Students match noun and verb picture cards, then earn a point by saying a complete sentence that makes sense.
Create a class routine book with one drawing and sentence from each student about something they do during the school day.
