What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students build sentences by combining independent and dependent clauses in several ways. They use conjunctions and punctuation to make relationships clear and vary the rhythm of their writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly join independent and dependent clauses using suitable conjunctions and punctuation. They can choose different sentence structures to show relationships between ideas and improve flow.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse sentence length with sentence type or label any sentence with a comma as compound. They may create fragments, comma splices, or unclear sentences when joining clauses.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket asking students to write four sentences about one topic, using each sentence type once. Have them underline clauses and circle conjunctions.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips with independent and dependent clauses, then have them build and label four different sentence structures.
Ask students to explain which sentence structure best shows contrast, cause, or sequence, then write one example for each relationship.
Play Sentence Type Relay, where teams revise one basic sentence into the four required structures without changing its main idea.
Have students revise a school announcement by varying sentence structures to make the message clear, concise, and engaging.
