What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students combine independent and dependent clauses to create four sentence structures. They choose structures that show relationships between ideas and make their writing less repetitive.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly build and identify all four sentence types. They use complete clauses, suitable conjunctions, and correct punctuation while choosing structures that make their ideas clear.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse sentence length with sentence type. They may join independent clauses with only a comma, or mistake any sentence with a conjunction for a compound sentence. They may also write dependent clauses as complete sentences.

How to Assess It

Give an exit ticket: Write one sentence of each type about a school event, label each type, and underline every independent clause.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs clause strips and conjunction cards, then have them build, label, and punctuate four different sentence types.

  2. Ask students to explain which sentence type best shows contrast, cause, or sequence, then write an example supporting their choice.

  3. Play sentence sort relay with cards showing sentences that teams classify, correct, and place under the matching structure.

  4. Compare sentences from news headlines, advertisements, or school announcements, then rewrite two using different structures without changing their meaning.
