What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine a complete thought with a dependent idea using a fitting subordinating conjunction. They vary clause order and punctuate sentences correctly to shape emphasis and flow.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can revise a short paragraph to include at least three accurate complex sentences without repeating one pattern. Each conjunction shows a clear relationship, and punctuation matches the clause order.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often leave a subordinate clause as a fragment or attach it to a main clause with incorrect punctuation. They may add unnecessary commas, omit a comma after an opening subordinate clause, or choose a conjunction that creates the wrong relationship.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Write two complex sentences about a canceled outdoor event. Begin one with a because clause, and place an although clause after the main clause in the other. Underline each subordinate clause and punctuate both sentences.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips with independent clauses, dependent clauses, and conjunctions, then have them build and punctuate three logical sentences.
Ask students to revise a flat paragraph, then explain how one added subordinate clause changes emphasis, pacing, or meaning.
Play Clause Match: students race to pair main and subordinate clause cards, choosing a conjunction and correct comma placement.
Use a school announcement or news lead and revise it using because, although, or when to add useful context.
