What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students create a complete sentence that names who or what, tells what happens, and adds a describing word. They expand a short sentence by adding an adjective while keeping clear word order.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a picture, a student can write and read aloud a sentence such as “The spotted frog jumps.” The student can identify each word’s job and add a fitting description to a shorter sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write fragments such as “The fluffy cat” because they leave out the action. They may place words in an unclear order or mistake words like “quickly” for an adjective.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of a red bird flying. Ask students to write one complete sentence, then underline the noun, circle the verb, and box the adjective.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs noun, verb, and adjective word cards; students arrange three cards into a sentence, read it, then illustrate it.
Show a picture of a muddy dog and ask, “What is it like, and what is it doing?” Students write one sentence.
Play Sentence Builder: students draw one card from each labeled pile, build a sensible sentence, and earn a point for correct order.
Students observe the playground, choose one person or object, and write a sentence that names it, describes it, and tells an action.
