What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students decide who will read their piece and what they want it to do. They sketch an idea, explain it, and use a classmate’s suggestion to plan more details.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student names a reader and gives a clear reason for writing. The student sketches a relevant idea and uses a partner’s suggestion to add a useful detail.

Common Misconceptions

Students may draw without connecting the picture to a writing idea. They may name what they will make but not who will read it or why.

How to Assess It

Ask each student to plan a class welcome note by drawing, then tell who will read it and what the note should do.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students cards for a birthday invitation, class story, and animal book; they choose one and sketch a page plan.

  2. Ask, “Who will read your piece, and what should they know, feel, or do?” Then partners suggest one detail.

  3. Play Audience Match: students pair writing cards with reader cards, then explain each match to a partner.

  4. Plan a thank-you note to the custodian, including a drawing of one helpful job the custodian does.
