K.W.1 is a Standards of Learning standard. These are the knowledge and skills expectations under it.

What Students Need to Do

Students use pictures, spoken words, and early writing to tell an ordered story. They describe a clear topic with a matching detail and respond to a book read aloud.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students create a clear beginning, middle, and ending that stay connected. They name a topic, add a matching detail, and respond to a read-aloud through pictures, speech, or words.

Common Misconceptions

Students may list events without putting them in order. They may add details that do not match the topic or retell a book without answering the prompt.

How to Assess It

After a read-aloud, give students three boxes labeled first, next, and last. Ask them to draw each event and tell or write one matching detail.

   Give pairs three picture cards from a familiar event; students order and glue them, then draw or dictate a caption for each.

   After a read-aloud, ask, “What happened first, next, and last, and which picture detail proves your answer?”

   Play Story Train: students place beginning, middle, and ending cards in order, then add one sentence or dictated line to each car.

   Create a classroom museum label for a favorite object, naming it and adding one detail about its color, use, or texture.
