2.W.2 is a Standards of Learning standard. These are the knowledge and skills expectations under it.

  Writing a clear topic sentence focusing on the main idea.

  Identifying the audience and purpose of the writing.

  Developing, selecting, and organizing ideas and details relevant to the topic, purpose, and genre.

  Providing a concluding statement or section.

What Students Need to Do

Before drafting, students name the reader and decide what they want the writing to accomplish. They plan a focused opening, choose useful details, arrange them clearly, and write a fitting ending.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can name the intended reader and explain the goal of the piece. The opening sets a clear focus, each detail belongs and follows a sensible order, and the ending wraps up the idea.

Common Misconceptions

Students may begin with an unrelated hook or choose details just because they are interesting. They may confuse the reader with the writing goal, list ideas in random order, or add a new idea in the ending.

How to Assess It

Ask students to write four sentences that explain recess to a new student. Have them name the reader and goal, then include a focused opening, two useful details, and a clear ending.

   Give pairs sentence strips from a short paragraph; have them remove one off-topic detail and arrange the rest into beginning, middle, and ending.

   Ask, “How would your writing change if you explained a class pet to a kindergartner instead of the principal?”

3. 03

   Play Detail Detective: read a topic card and three detail cards, then students hold up the two details that belong.

4. 04

   Have students write a welcome note for a new classmate, using classroom facts that fit the reader and a friendly closing.
