What Students Need to Do

Students connect illustrations to specific moments in a story. With teacher support, they compare characters, events, or settings across familiar stories and speak up when listening becomes confusing.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student explains which story moment an illustration shows using picture and story details. With a prompt, the student compares two characters, events, or settings and asks for help when confused.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name objects in a picture without connecting them to a story event. They may give unrelated differences between stories or stay silent when meaning is unclear.

How to Assess It

Show an illustration from a familiar story and ask, “What is happening here, and how do you know?” Then ask for one similarity or difference from another familiar story.

   Give pairs mixed illustration cards from a familiar book to sequence, then have them explain which story event each card shows.

   After reading two familiar stories, ask, “How are the main characters alike, and how are they different?”

   Play Illustration Detective by showing one picture and having students identify the matching event from three oral choices.
