What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students look closely at an illustration and connect it to a specific story event. They use details from the picture and the read-aloud text to explain the match.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student identifies the story moment shown in an illustration. The student points to a character, action, object, or setting detail that supports the answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may describe everything in the picture without connecting it to an event. They may also confuse what happened before or after the pictured moment.
How to Assess It
- Read a short page aloud and show its illustration. Ask, “What part of the story does this picture show, and what picture clue helped you?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs three event cards and three story pictures to match, then have them point to one clue in each picture.
After reading a page, ask, “Which words match what you see in the picture?” and have partners share answers.
Play picture match bingo by reading story events aloud while students cover the matching illustrations and explain each choice.
Show a photo from a class activity beside three captions, then ask students to choose the caption that matches the pictured moment.
