What Students Need to Do

Students read two texts on the same subject and track each author’s claims, evidence, reasoning, and conclusion. They compare purpose, content, organization, and wording to judge agreement, conflict, and clarity.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify where two texts agree, conflict, or emphasize different information. They explain how evidence, reasoning, purpose, organization, and wording shape each conclusion and affect clarity.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat any shared topic as a shared idea. They may compare facts without examining purpose, reasoning, or clarity. They may also mistake a different conclusion for an inaccurate one.

How to Assess It

Give students two short articles about the same issue. Ask: “Name one shared idea, one conflict, and one reason the authors reach different conclusions.”

   Cut claims and evidence from two articles into strips, then have pairs sort, match, and label agreements and conflicts.

   Ask students to write: “Which author makes the clearer case, and what specific choice makes it clearer?”

   Run a comparison relay where teams fill a chart with each text’s purpose, main claim, evidence, conclusion, and clearest section.

4. 04

   Compare two phone setup guides or product reviews, then decide which better serves its intended reader and explain why.
