What Students Need to Do

Students connect relevant background knowledge to new information without letting it replace evidence from the text. They compare accounts and explain relationships, including what happened and why.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students compare two accounts and identify meaningful similarities and differences in viewpoint. They explain how people, events, ideas, or steps affect one another and cite details that support the explanation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat any detail as a difference, even when it does not reflect point of view. They may confuse sequence with cause and rely on prior knowledge instead of text evidence.

How to Assess It

Give students two short accounts of the same event. Ask them to name one viewpoint difference and explain one cause and effect using evidence.

   Have pairs sort sentence strips from two accounts into shared facts, unique details, and viewpoint clues, then explain their choices.

   Ask students to write: How does each author view the event, and which words reveal that view?

   Play Cause and Connection Match by pairing event, idea, or procedure cards with text evidence showing how they relate.

   Compare two local news reports about one community event, then identify shared facts, viewpoint differences, and reasons for those differences.
