What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare two or more accounts of one event or topic. They identify shared facts, different details, and how each writer's position shapes the account.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify facts and ideas shared across accounts. They explain differences in emphasis, word choice, or included details using evidence from each text.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat any different detail as a contradiction, even when the writers simply chose different facts. They may confuse point of view with pronouns or assume one account must be wrong.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short accounts of one event. Ask them to name one shared detail, one difference, and how each writer's role shapes the account.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs three eyewitness cards about a classroom event, then sort details into shared, unique, and opinion categories.
Ask students to write: How does each writer's role affect which details are included or emphasized?
Play an account-matching game where students pair details with the likely speaker, such as a player, coach, reporter, or fan.
Compare a sports recap with a player interview, then discuss why the accounts emphasize different parts of the same game.
