What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use pictures and details to compare two books about the same subject. With teacher questions or sentence frames, they also explain how people, events, ideas, or facts relate.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given questions, pictures, or sentence frames, students state one similarity and one difference between two books. They also explain a clear connection using words such as both, but, because, or then.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name facts without explaining how they are alike or different. They may also confuse sequence with connection, or connect details using guesses not supported by the text.
How to Assess It
- Read two short animal books aloud. Ask each student to name one shared fact, one difference, and how two facts in one book connect.

Ways to Teach It
Read two insect books, then have students sort picture cards into both books, book one, or book two hoops.
Ask, "How are the two animals alike, and how are they different?" Record student answers in a class chart.
Play Connection Match by pairing event or fact cards, then explaining each pair with because, so, or then.
Compare two classroom weather reports, then discuss what changed and how temperature, clouds, and clothing choices connect.
