1.RI.3 is a Standards of Learning standard. These are the knowledge and skills expectations under it.

  Identify basic similarities in and differences between two texts on the same topic.

  Describe the connection between two individuals, events, ideas, or pieces of information in a text.

What Students Need to Do

Students read or listen to two nonfiction sources about one subject and explain what they share and how they differ. They also tell how people, events, facts, or ideas within one source relate to each other.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can state one meaningful likeness and one difference, using details from both sources. They can explain a relationship within one source using words such as because, before, after, or both.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name details from each book without explaining how the details relate. They may confuse a shared topic with a shared fact. They also may retell events instead of stating how one event causes or follows another.

How to Assess It

Give students two short passages about bees. Ask, “What is one fact both passages share, what is one difference, and how are two facts connected?”

   Read two animal fact sheets, then have pairs place detail cards on a floor Venn diagram and explain their choices.

   Ask, “How are the two people or events connected?” and have students answer with because, before, after, or both.

   Play Same, Different, or Connected by reading detail pairs aloud while students hold up labeled cards and explain one answer.

4. 04

   Compare a school lunch menu with a nutrition poster, then name shared information, differences, and how one food supports the body.
