What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use what they already know to make sense of new information. They compare two texts on one topic, explain how ideas or events connect, and support written responses with details.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the main points and supporting details in two texts, then explain clear similarities and differences. They describe sequence or cause-and-effect links and support their writing with accurate text details.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list facts from each text without explaining how the facts match or differ. They may confuse sequence with cause and effect, or give opinions without citing text evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short passages about animal migration. Ask them to name one shared idea, one difference, and one cause-and-effect connection, using details from the passages.

Ways to Teach It

Ask students to write: How did your prior knowledge help you understand one new idea, and which sentence confirmed it?
Play Connection Sort with cards showing events, causes, effects, and procedure steps, then have teams explain each match.
Compare two weather safety guides, then have students create a class checklist supported by details from both guides.
