2.RI.3 is a Standards of Learning standard. These are the knowledge and skills expectations under it.

  Compare and contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the same topic.

What Students Need to Do

Students connect new information to relevant experiences and facts they already know. They compare the key points in two texts about one topic. They explain how people, events, or ideas in a text affect or relate to each other.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify the key points in each text and tell how those points are alike or different. They use relevant background knowledge without replacing text evidence. They clearly explain how one person, event, or idea affects another.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose an interesting detail instead of a key point. They may use prior knowledge even when the text says something different. They may list two events without explaining how one affects the other.

How to Assess It

Give students two short passages about how beavers build dams. Ask for one prior connection, one shared key point, one different key point, and how the dam changes the stream.

   Give pairs two short animal texts and fact cards; students sort shared and unique key points, then connect related events with arrows.

   Ask students to write: What did you already know, what was new, and how did one idea help explain another?

   Play Key Point Match, where students pair main-point cards from two texts and label each pair alike or different.

4. 04

   Compare two school lunch menus and nutrition notes, then explain how food choices affect energy during the school day.
