What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify two people, events, ideas, or facts in an informational text. They explain how the two are linked using words like because, so, before, after, or both.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student names both parts accurately and states a relationship supported by the text. The explanation uses a clear link, such as cause and effect, sequence, or similarity.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may retell two details without explaining the link. They may rely on pictures or prior knowledge, or confuse what happened first with what caused it.
How to Assess It
- Read aloud: “Rain filled the pond. The frogs had more water to swim in.” Ask, “How are the rain and frogs connected?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture and sentence cards from a short article, then have them match connected details and explain each match.
After reading about animal parents, ask, “How does the parent help the baby?” Students answer with one detail from the text.
Play Connection Match: students draw two fact cards and keep the pair if they can explain the text-based link.
Compare a rainy-day notice with the recess schedule, then have students explain why the recess location changes.
