What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students speak and write complete thoughts, then add details about number, size, age, shape, color, or place. They use nouns, pronouns, adjectives, and verbs to make meaning clear. They choose language for the situation and use capitals, ending marks, and sound-based spelling with support.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can say and write a complete thought, then add a describing word or action. The student names people, places, and things, and uses pronouns clearly. Writing begins with a capital, ends with a fitting mark, and includes readable sound-based spelling.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give a sentence fragment, omit the subject, or confuse nouns with verbs. They may use a capital on every word or forget to capitalize I. They may also choose a period for a question or avoid spelling words unless they know every letter.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of two children carrying boxes. Ask students to write one statement and one question about it, using capitals, ending marks, and best-guess spelling.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs toy people, animals, and objects, then have them build and expand sentences with noun, pronoun, adjective, and verb cards.
Ask, “How would you request a pencil from a friend and from the principal?” Record and compare both responses.
Play Sentence Fix-It by showing short sentences with missing capitals, pronouns, verbs, or punctuation for students to repair on whiteboards.
Create classroom signs and notes, such as “I need help.” or “Where are the crayons?” using capitals, punctuation, and sound-based spelling.
