What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use naming words for people, places, and things. They identify these nouns in pictures, speech, and simple sentences.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students name people, places, and things shown in pictures or found around the classroom. They sort familiar nouns into the correct group and use them in simple spoken sentences.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name an action instead of a person, place, or thing. They may also think nouns are only objects they can touch, so they miss names such as school or park.

How to Assess It

Show pictures of a teacher, a playground, and a ball. Ask students to name each picture and tell whether it is a person, place, or thing.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students picture cards to sort onto three mats labeled person, place, and thing.

  2. Ask, "What people, places, and things did you see on your way to school?" Record responses in three columns.

  3. Play a noun hunt by calling out person, place, or thing and having students point to a matching classroom example.

  4. Use a grocery bag of familiar items, and have students name each object before placing it into a class store.
