What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use pronouns to talk about one person or a group without repeating names. They also use pronouns to show who owns an object.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose he or she for one identified person and they for a group. They use his, hers, or theirs to tell who owns something.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use a person’s name repeatedly instead of a pronoun. They may confuse they with he or she, and mix up their with theirs.
How to Assess It
- Read aloud: “Mia uses she. Ben uses he. The two friends use they.” Ask students to complete: “___ is Mia. The hat is ___. ___ are friends. The toys are ___.”

Ways to Teach It
Sort labeled character cards under he, she, or they, then match object cards under his, hers, or theirs.
Read, “Lena has a kite. The kite belongs to Lena,” then have students rewrite it using she and hers.
Play Pronoun Match by having students pair name and group cards with the correct pronoun cards.
During cleanup, point to personal and table supplies, then have students describe them using his, hers, or theirs.
