Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students improve drafts by sharpening ideas, choosing precise words, varying sentences, and connecting paragraphs. They edit their own work and a partner's work for conventions and complete sentences.
What Mastery Looks Like: A strong student can revise a draft so ideas are clear, words are precise, sentences flow, and paragraphs connect. The student also corrects grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and paragraph breaks.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat revision as fixing spelling and commas only. They may add transitions that do not show a clear relationship between ideas. Some create sentence variety by making sentences longer, even when meaning becomes unclear.
How to Assess It: Give students a short paragraph with repeated sentence openings, one weak transition, and three mechanical errors. Ask them to revise it and label each change.

Lesson moves

Cut a sample paragraph into sentence strips, then have pairs reorder, combine, and revise the sentences for clearer flow.
Ask students to explain in writing which single revision most improved their draft and why.
Run an editing relay where teams correct one marked issue at each station, including punctuation, spelling, structure, and transitions.
Have students revise a school announcement or club email so readers can understand the message quickly and act on it.
