What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students trace how particular sentences, paragraphs, and sections build ideas in an informational text. They compare authors’ presentations of one topic by examining emphasized facts, opinions, and reasoning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students point to exact sentences or sections and explain how each one develops an idea. They compare texts using evidence about the facts, opinions, and reasoning each author emphasizes.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may summarize each text without comparing the authors’ choices. They may label any statement as opinion, or assume different viewpoints mean one author is inaccurate.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short passages on the same topic. Ask: “Name one detail each author emphasizes, explain its effect, and identify one section that develops a key idea.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs printed articles and highlighters to mark facts, opinions, reasoning, and sections that develop each author’s main idea.
Ask students to write: “How does each author guide readers toward a different view of the topic?”
Play Evidence Sort by having teams place quoted details under author, fact, opinion, reasoning, and purpose labels.
Compare two news reports about one school event and discuss how selected details create different impressions.
