Students explain how characters, settings, events, and ideas shape one another. They compare details across paired fiction and nonfiction texts. They also explain how individual sections build the whole text.

Students can trace a clear chain from setting to action to outcome. They compare specific details across fiction and nonfiction. They explain how a chapter, scene, or stanza develops the text’s structure and meaning.

Common Misconceptions

Students may list characters, settings, and events without explaining how they affect each other. They may name a shared theme without comparing evidence. They may summarize a chapter or scene instead of explaining its role in the whole text.

How to Assess It

Give students a fictional scene and memoir excerpt about moving to a new place. Ask how the setting shapes each person’s choice, what differs, and how one section builds each text.

   Give groups character, setting, event, and idea cards from a story; students connect them with arrows labeled to show each influence.

   Ask students to write: How does one scene change a character’s choice, and how does that choice develop the shared theme?

   Run a matching game where students pair chapters, scenes, or stanzas with statements explaining each part’s job in the whole text.
