Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students explain how setting, characters, and plot affect one another. They also compare how texts in different genres or forms develop a similar topic or theme, using evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can trace how a setting creates limits or opportunities, influences character decisions, and drives plot events. They can compare how two genres present a shared theme, using specific evidence from both texts.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat setting as background detail instead of a force that affects choices and events. They may confuse topic with theme or compare only surface features, such as length or format.
How to Assess It: Give students a short story excerpt and a poem with a shared theme. Ask them to explain one way setting shapes the story and one difference in how the texts present the theme.

Lesson moves

Give groups setting, character, and event cards from a story; students arrange them with arrows showing how each element affects another.
Discuss: How would the protagonist’s choices and the ending change if the story moved to a safer place or different era?
Play Evidence Match: teams pair claims about setting or theme with quotation cards, then explain each match for a point.
Compare a song and a short story about belonging, then write which form connects more strongly to students’ community experiences.
