What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose verbs based on who performs the action and whether something receives the action. They also change each verb to the correct tense, including irregular forms.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student writes and revises sentences using each verb pair accurately. The student can identify the direct object and use correct forms such as lay, lain, rose, and raised.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think lay is always present tense and overlook that it is also the past tense of lie. They may omit the object after set or raise, or create forms such as rised and raised up.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Yesterday, Mia ___ on the couch. Please ___ the book here. Steam ___. The crew ___ the flag.” Students fill each blank and underline any direct object.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs verb cards and sentence strips, then have students match each sentence to the verb that does or does not need an object.
Ask students to explain the difference between “The sun rose” and “We raised the flag,” using the words subject and object.
Play verb relay: teams complete sentence frames with the correct present, past, or past participle form and earn points for accurate explanations.
Have students edit short workplace notes, such as “Set the boxes here” and “Prices rose,” then explain each verb choice.
