What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students set a clear time frame for events and choose verb forms that match it. They find and fix accidental shifts while keeping changes that clearly signal a different time.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a paragraph with mixed verb forms, a student can identify the intended time frame and correct each accidental shift. In a short retelling, the student changes tense only when the timeline changes and can explain why.

Common Misconceptions

Students often begin a story in past tense, then slip into present tense when the action becomes exciting. They may change tense when a new sentence begins or treat every tense change as wrong. Some miss tense clues in helping verbs such as has, had, and will.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Revise this paragraph so its verbs match the timeline: “Yesterday, Maya walks to practice, forgot her shoes, and calls her coach. Now she waits for a ride.” Underline the verbs and explain why one tense change should remain.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips from a mixed-tense story; they arrange the timeline, circle each verb, and replace accidental shifts.

  2. Write six sentences about a childhood memory, then add one sentence about your view now and explain the tense change.

  3. Run a tense editor relay: teams correct one verb in a projected paragraph, then tag the next editor.

  4. Students edit a mock workplace incident report so completed events use past tense and current conditions use present tense.
