What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find the subject in a sentence and decide whether it names one person or thing or more than one. They choose a verb form that matches the subject when talking and writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students consistently match singular subjects with singular verbs and plural subjects with plural verbs. They can find the correct subject even when another noun appears between the subject and verb.

Common Misconceptions

Students may match the verb to the nearest noun instead of the sentence subject. They may add an s to a verb with a plural subject or overlook irregular forms such as is and are.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “The basket of apples ___ on the table. My friends ___ soccer. Choose sit or sits, then play or plays.” Ask students to underline each subject and explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs subject cards and verb cards, then have them build and read aloud five matching sentences.

  2. Ask students to write two sentences about recess, underline each subject, and circle the verb that matches it.

  3. Play a subject-verb relay where teams select the correct verb card to complete each sentence posted around the room.

  4. Have students edit a mock morning announcement, correcting subject-verb errors before reading the revised version aloud.
