What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students build complete sentences by placing phrases and clauses where they make sense. They match singular and plural subjects with the correct verb, including when other words separate them.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can expand a complete sentence with well-placed phrases and clauses. The student can find the true subject and select the correct verb, even when extra words separate them.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a phrase or dependent clause as a complete sentence. They may match the verb to the nearest noun instead of the true subject. Compound subjects and interrupting phrases often cause agreement errors.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Revise “The basket of apples sit on the table.” Correct the agreement, add a dependent clause, and label the phrase and clauses.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs arrange color-coded subject, verb, phrase, and clause strips into complete sentences, then check each sentence for agreement.
Ask students to write two versions of one idea, one with a phrase and one with a dependent clause, then compare the effects.
Play an agreement relay where teams match subject cards to verb cards and explain each choice before earning a point.
Give students a school announcement to edit by adding useful details and correcting subject-verb agreement errors.
